The anhinga, a striking waterbird found in South Texas wetlands, symbolizes resilience and the connection between humans and nature. Often found in wetlands like resecas, this bird represents the importance of preserving these ecosystems, which provide essential services such as flood mitigation, wildlife habitat, and recreational opportunities. Texas’ Indigenous people have long recognized the anhinga’s significance, viewing it as a guardian of water and symbol of land preservation. As we face environmental challenges, the anhinga reminds us of our duty as land stewards and the wisdom of indigenous science.
